Plural: Foreign Nouns | French and Italian

Words with French origin:

Words with Italian origin (An exception to this rule is the word 'paparazzo' which keeps an Italian plural  - 'paparazzi'):

The words from Italian that mean pasta, such as: tagliatelle, cannelloni, tortellini or lasagne (AmE: lasagna; BrE: lasagne), are already in their plural form, however, in some cases you can add -s to form plural in English.

Examples:

  • This recipe for cannelloni is filled with a mixture of non-fat ricotta cheese, spinach and Parmesan cheese. (cannelloni - a kind of pasta)
  • They ordered three spaghettis and two cannellonis. (‘a dish or serving of spaghetti’ rather than ‘a kind of pasta’.)
